The arch and gates are grade two listed. The main arch was designed and built in the late 16th Century or early 17th Century. It is built from limestone and surrounds the double iron gates, which along with the two smaller pedestrian arches and their gates were added in the 19th Century.
The gateway originally formed the entrance to the estate of Pytchley Old Hall but this was demolished in about 1824. The gates were dismantled and moved to their current location (and the pedestrian side arches and metal gates added) in 1843 to form part of the entrance to Overstone Hall.
The gates were damaged by a car accident in 1973 and had to be substantially re-built.
