This is a ruin which is perched at the very top of Burgh Island. it is believed to be what is left of the huers hut. The French verb ' huer', 'to call out', gives a clue as to its former purpose. The huer watched the south western sea for the arrival of vast shoals of pilchards, which glittered in the summer sunlight to form a silver shining sea. As soon as they were spotted he gave out such a 'hue and cry' that waiting fishermen knew they were in business. This info was from a local man and also a book on Burgh Island
However in one book i read it was apparently built in 1874 by the grandfather of a 'Mr Fox' for the added comfort of picnic parties......Anyway, whatever it was built for and used as, it remains a beautiful old building with amazing views from all sides. Plus its one hell of a climb to get up there, but worth it.
Luckily for me it was a very hot afternoon in August of this year. So hope you enjoy the pictures.
I wonder if there was a telescope here.......
One of the views
Looking back up as we walked down.....
Quick drink in here.......well it would be rude not to..
Then after a couple of drinks the walk back to the mainland was just as magical.....
Hope you enjoyed looking as much as i did.........
