St Mary's Hospital, designed by RW Johnson, was built at the east side of a former workhouse in 1869 to 1870. On each side of the building was a separate entrance for male and female patients.
The workhouse, originally designed by Charles Dyer and built in 1836, was a place that the local poor people could work at for food and clothing.
To the best of my knowledge the hospital has been closed for around 5 years. Internally decay is starting to set in, although it still looks in use from the front. This is due to the well maintained gardens and staff from the hospital behind as well as local residents and visitors to the town still using the car park.
Whilst Mikeymutt and I were looking for a way in we were approached by a woman who resembled an old Matron. She came walking over to Mikeymutt asking what he was up to. He told her we were just taking pictures of the outside of the building and then she left. I'm glad she did because she looked pretty scary!!!
