After doing the flat one
I was more than a little intrigued by the steep one as no-one lives there permanently.
Here's a comprehensive history via Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steep_Holm
The ferry is one of those rigid inflatables with 2 outboard motors that aquaplanes & sometimes flies (not good on the back or nuts).
The difference between the islands is really interesting.
The flat one is Welsh & the Steep one English.
The flat one has more interesting structures to explore especially underground.
Whereas the steep one has a railway, more guns & access unlimited to concrete steps & walkways high above the cliffs.
Enough of my waffle here are the pictures.
Inside the Inn
Gun Battery
Nice to see the seagulls treating historical weapons of war with due respect.
AA Bofors gun.
Victorian gun emplacement.
& underground magazine - all of the underground bits look much like this.
Observation point above Rudder Rock.
No idea as to why someone tried burying a canon inside here.
Having seen this searchlight position from the boat I thought it possible for me to scramble down & photograph it.
Didn't take account of my fear of heights.
Next ammo store & some WW2 graffiti
Another battery
The business end.
Crest visible on one of the discarded guns.
Concrete Blockhouse.
Bits of the steep railway (rails nicked from the Germans in WW 1).
Toilet Block.
Ventilation shaft to underground magazine.
Search light post.
Gantry.
Remains of the old Farm House.
Remains of Cottage built into the cliff face.
More WW2 graffiti
This is either the power cables or telegraph cables to Brean Down.
At low tide there is a spit of pebbles created where the ingoing & outgoing tides meet.
& there are some beautiful rock caves at sea level revealed at very low tide
Time for
Full set - there are a lot more. https://www.flickr.com/photos/infraredd/albums/72157657063768579
