Hi All
This is the second part of our trip around the underground areas of the now demolished Grain land fort in Kent, (there is plenty of info/history about the site in part 1).
Again the layout of the tunnels is the same with them ending with the two caponiers but this time the North side features two Draw bridges and there associated pits, a large magazine with its shifting lobby and an elevated lighting passage that is reached by a set of stone steps and an under flood drainage pit.
The Musket slits are still visible in the remaining caponier.
Sexy picture time...................
Draw bridge 1 and its pit (it`s deep)
Just before you get to the Shifting lobby and magazine is the shell hoist.
After this you turn a few corners and you are in the shifting lobby for the main magazine.
Note the lighting passage above the shifting lobby - with soot still on the inner surface.
Then in to the main magazine itself.
This is the stone staircase leading up to the elevated lighting passage above the shifting lobby.
This is the remaining caponier left in the north side area.
Musket slits still visible
The walk to the now demolished second caponier takes you over the second draw bridge and its DEEP pit.
Right that will do or you lot will all get over excited and won`t sleep tonight.
There are more pictures on my FlickR site so head on over too:- https://www.flickr.com/photos/newage2/albums/72157676236370734/with/32558157941/
Thanks for looking and all comments are most welcome.
Cheers Newage
