The 'Severn Princess' was found wrecked and abandoned in Connemara, Ireland in March 1999. The Princess is the last remaining example of the Aust Ferry, a service which used to cross the Severn between Chepstow and Bristol prior to the opening of the Severn road crossing in the 1960's. The ferry was recovered from Ireland and relocated back to Chepstow in the late 1990's for restoration but has been left untouched in its current location since 2005.

It was actually 'parked' up about 100 yards from the slipway on the Beachley side on the shoreline for about 5 years before they moved it to its present location. Not that they moved it that far to its current location !

The fellow running the Old Ferry Inn was behind trying to get it restored but looks like that plan has gone south of the border.

,,,,,,,,,,,when I was a kid we went across the ferry many times so I might have been on that ,,,,,,not that I can remember anything,,

thanks

It's sad to see. There's a few reports from the ferry terminal at Aust on here.

Great little report and I do like the photo's, sorry to be picky but you mentioned it was found in 1999 and relocated in the late 1990's so I presume it was relocated soon after it was found. A great shame to see it Languishing like that, I hope it is retored. :)

After the Severn Princess was brought back there was quite an active web site operated by the preservation group formed to restore the vessel. But it disappeared a few years ago.

Anyone know why the scheme failed?

Whilst ship preservation isn't a cheap past time this is quite a small vessel and of significant historic interest.
