I tried to find the VHF site to RAF Acklington last time I was up that way but failed miserably, this as I found out was because I was looking in the wrong area a couple of miles from where it actually is. There isn't much to the site, a generator building, the radio set house and a blast shelter but it was still worth a look and another one less on the to do list. Right this could be quite pic heavy but you know to expect that from me by now lol...on with the pics

I still had a bit of time to kill so I thought I would have a look for some of the pillboxes round Alnwick

Pillbox S0007339 a sandbag Beehive type with 2 embrasures overlooking the river Aln and the old A1

These pillboxes must have been thrown together in a hurry because their construction wasn't the best compared to other beehives I've been in as can be seen in the next photo

Pillbox S0007340 again a beehive pillbox overlooking the river Aln but this one has 3 embrasures

I tried to get to pillbox S0007341 as I have seen photos of it but couldn't find my way to it and had no internet signal on my phone to get google maps up so thats a job for next time. Finally though we have the Alnwick loophole (embrasured) wall S0007201 which is around the churchyard overlooking the southern approach to Alnwick on the old A1. It now overlooks B&Q carpark and I got some strange looks when I was taking these photo's lol

Cheers for looking
Jon

Great Pic's as usual, Been hoping all weekend that someone was going to post more pillboxes to drool over, really like the loophole wall. Nice find mate.

Excellent and informative post as always !!:) Never seen a sandbag style pillbox before. You certainly have more of a variety of pillboxes up t' north !!

cheers guys glad you enjoyed them the third pillbox in this line is a sandbag one as well but not is quite as good condition and there is also a defended building close by as well. I now know how to get to them now so thats for next time. We do get a good mix of pillboxes round this way but I'm still yet to find a type 27 and that is bugging the s**t out of me because I've never seen one in the flesh so to speak. Rich mate I had to do the VHF site after we were looking for it the other night and I couldn't wait. I have devised a plan to get the two remaining pillboxes at raf acklington as well so watch this space lol. The guard cows were at the other side of the field when I went in and I'd totally forgot about them till I was coming out of the blast shelter then it was a case of heart attack followed by the thought of I'm in a brick lined building with only one way in or out and the cows are there if they decide to come in here I'll be crushed. lol luckily for me they didn't.

Interesting. There's a near-identical structure to the radio set house on the hill above Aberystwyth which used to be part of the Radar station there. I'd had it marked down as a barrack building, but a radio set house would make more sense in context - there's also a building nearby which might have served as the generator hut, but no blast shelter:

Great report and interesting details, thanks for posting.

That building is nearly identical and it's very probable that the other one is the generator building. I'd say it's a VHF station. Think your mystery is solved TA

The bad news is the nearest ones to you are at Drone Hill CHL station in The Scottish Borders North of Berwick-upon-Tweed. The good news is they are probably the best preserved and most complete set in the country. Maybe a Dirty weekend away for you and Mrs Jonney? (I'm always covered in crap when I come out of a pillbox).

I'm familiar with this situation jon. you're never really quite sure what they might do, young cows particularly, and you wouldn't want to panic them in an enclosed space.

Sheep move in the opposite direction and are almost as good at blowing your cover.

Quality report mate, thanks. :)
