George Barnsley & Sons Ltd - Sheffield - September 2010

George Barnsley and Sons Ltd. (founded 1836) They were in Cornish Place on the Don and specialised in forge filing and cutting tools for leather workers and shoe makers. One George Barnsley was Master Cutler in 1883.:
George Barnsley and Son is listed in the 1837 Sheffield directory as a file manufacture situated on Wheeldon Street, The 1849 listing records a move to Cornhill and the 1852 to Cornesh works Cornesh street they had by this time also increased there product range to include steel files, shoe and butchers knives.
They are again listed in 1944 as manufactures of files and blades shoe knives and leather workers tools.
In the 1948 listing the business had become George Barnsley and Son Ltd.
From the information I have found, this place finally closed in 1994.

The offices are in pretty decant shape compared to some of the other parts of the building.

As a lot of people like signs, I thought I would include a few.

There was still some 'stock' left also

The stock rooms had some amazing joinery.

The views of this building do not disappoint either.

And to finish, a nice picture that was on the wall, a wireless and a contraption that had me baffled (any ideas?)

Some good images and thanks for the link.. You have got stuff we have missed.. Just a note for people this place is getting more unsafe, and is a no go in the daytime and if you are going to do the basements good footwear and erm a good powerful torch..

I agree, although daytime is possible BUT you have to be very very stealthy :mrgreen:

i am going to do a portrait shoot in sheffield this weekend and a location like this looks amazing for what i want. can you give me any information on access and security... also how much time do you think i would have to set up studio lights... is that a little optimistic maybe?

if you can suggest any other locations in the sheffield area i would be very very appreciative.

Firstly, you'll need to make sure the model is fully aware of the state of this location and understands the dangers, also that a model release form is signed by both parties and that any public liability insurance covers you should the whole place collapse around you mid shoot and kill you to death till you die from it!

Aside from that, low light, cramped spaces and accessing the place with studio lights is not only troublesome, it's stupid. May as well wear bright clothes and hold up a sign telling all the locals what you're upto. I've shot many things like this, studio strobes are a no no. Instead I use a Canon ST-E2 to fire 2x 550EX and 430EX speedlites so all i need is my camera bag and a sling with a few stands.
Problem with this location is that it is like going through a time warp. It needs to be kept a closely guarded secret to stop it becoming trashed.

With only 4 contributions to the site, I suspect nobody will be willing to risk disclosing info about it other than what you see in reports.

top advice cheers canonite, its nice to see some great pics of a place and the fact it gets kept secret is even better for a place like this, the last thing u need is someone turning up with half of jessops shop under his arm and a model in tow

model shots can look great but i guess u need to do your own homework and find your own place like alot of other photographers do, best of luck beans on toast there is plenty more to see :mrgreen:
