Maidstone - 1 Group ROC HQ was built in 1959 and opened on the 25th June 1960 on an existing site for 1 Group Royal Observer Corps that had been operational since 1939.

Maidstone was part of the Metropolitan Sector, along with Horsham, Oxford, Colchester and Winchester. Each Group HQ controlled between 20 and 30 ROC Posts and collated data from all of these sites at five minute intervals. The information was then logged and plotted at the HQ where they would produce fallout predictions based on current weather conditions, log the detonation type (burst height) and location/yield before disseminating this information out to other locations such as UKWMO HQ, Regional Government Headquarters and other military sites.

Since closure in 1992 1 Group ROC HQ has been owned by a local Solicitors who until recently used the structure for archive storage.

It is of the same design as all of the ROC Group HQ's in that its construction is of a semi sunken type, containing a totally sealed environment for ROC staff to operate in during operations. This particular Group HQ is in very good condition with all of the plant, filtration and ventilation systems intact and most likely operational. Recently the HQ has had a new roof fitted in order to try and combat the obvious damp issues the structure has.

Nice. Glad someone's finally done this as it's literally round the corner from me and I used to walk past it every bloody day wondering how to get permission to visit  Well done.

People have been visiting it for several years now, access to visit is very easy too. I can put you in touch with someone if you want.

Oh right, I've missed that then. That would be great actually, might have a little look round when I get home for Christmas. My mum actually used to work for the solicitors so it's familiar enough territory for me.

when I was in the kent ambulance service we had a exercise in it,the office draws had papers marked secret in them.

Excellent...looks practically mint. Especially good to see such a well-maintained Ops Room too.
Nice one, Hal. :)

The solicitors who own the site used to store files in it and in the past was always full of shelving/racking but current Health & Safety legislation has allegedly put pay to that, makes for a better visit ;)

for anyone who is interested in these may like to know there is an identical bunker at watford, it is at the rear of park vetenary surgery, if you contact them they are more than happy to let you have a look around, its in good nick too, when we went we made a small donation each just as a bit of a thank you.

Nice one. Was there any other artifacts apart from the obvious equipment?

Not that we could see, wasn't allowed in the BT room though. I'm sure the ex-ROC Observer Commander (he might have been a Lieutenant Commander, my memory is bad!!) said that a bunch of it went to the Kelvedon Hatch Sector Operations Centre though for their 'museum'.

How come you wernt allowed in the BT Room. Where you showed around by an ex roc guy?

Staff Organisation of Group Control ROC

Group Commandant (GC) AKA Observer Commander
Deputy Group Commandant (DGC) AKA Observer Lieutenant Commander
Group Staff Officer (GSO) AKA Observer Lieutenant

The bit about Kevledon Hatch sounds about right.

They have tons of stuff (duplicates) which they refuse to sell.

It was locked and to be honest I didn't ask to be let in. Time was tight as it was, photography was priority, not negotiating extra favours, we were kicked out in the end as it was

(In hindsight an extra donation would have most likely 'bought' us extra time)

Yeah, the original Observer Commander.

Exactly what I was thinking, needs preserving seeing as its in such good condition.

I would love to do a HQ, theres not even that much to do in there! Just a case of getting equipment. I might have to move to kent...
