I did pop a quick search in but drew a blank so I'm not sure this area has been covered before or not.
Where I went isnt strictly off limits but some of it just isnt noticed by people anymore and left well alone.

So... a bit of history.
Shaldon may seem like quite a quiet little town (and I use the term losely) but during the war it was only a stone's throw from the heavily bombed Teignmouth. Both towns sat either side of the river mouth and became very important for defenses, especially after the Dunkirk incident.

From my understanding there were several groups posted/working here and they are mentioned on an info board which is on display near The Ness; a coast regiment and a home guard batalion.

The site was soon used not only for sea defenses but air defense too
~ I am sure quite some time ago I found a womens account of being evacuated to Shaldon as a child and she remembers German aircraft flying over and taking potshots at cows in the fields (and anything the moved) but I can't seem to find it now... typical

Anyway... I digress....

I got bored one weekend and got an itch to go out regardless of the weather (it was pouring it down and I had obviously run out of common sense that day) so here is a little documentation of what can still be seen
~apologies as I was only using a compact camera that day

Shaldon01Small.jpg

*The cloud cover was very low and it was so wet... usually when you look across the river you can see far more of Teignmouth than this

Shaldon02Small.jpg

*The searchlight building which is now used as just a public shelter (although there is some form of radar equipment on top?)
The searchlight had an output of about 210 million candles and was powered by two diesel generators in the engine house. These generators also powered a second searchlight a bit further down.

Shaldon03Small.jpg

*Inside the searchlight building you can see across the river clearly... and now it is a not so cosy place to take the weight off your feet for five minutes

Shaldon14Small.jpg

*Not sure if this has any relevance at all but yet to find out any more about it

Shaldon04Small.jpg

*Overlooking the river mouth again is this... the location of a 4.7 Quick Firing Naval Gun (aparently of Japanese build) The gun was manned by a crew of 7 men

Shaldon05Small.jpg

*The evidence of where the gun was mounted. it was within what was a brick and wood hut which camouflaged it

Shaldon06Small.jpg

* The not-so-underground underground ammunition store, still in excellent condition today

Shaldon07Small.jpg

*The enterance to the underground ammunition store which backs straight onto the coast road (which at this time of year is dead... unlike summer season) it is supposedly in such good condition as the coucil has used it as a store room in the past (no idea about now though)

Shaldon12Small.jpg

*Just above the underground ammunition store is this... no where is it mentioned on the info board and after a bit of internet trawling I am still drawing a blank

Shaldon13Small.jpg

*Scrabbling up into the woodland produced this one

Shaldon08Small.jpg

*The engine house... hard to spot with all that undergrowth and easily missed if you arent looking for it. Luckily life was made easier thanks to the council clearing a lot of the undergrowth

Shaldon09Small.jpg

*The engine house a bit more up close and personal

Shaldon10Small.jpg

*The engine house all bricked up but the old black paint still hanging on in there (just)

Shaldon11Small.jpg

*The engine house again. Although it is totally sealed there may be a way of at least seeing inside although I do think it will now just be a view of plant life which has taken over

There is loads more I took photos of but the poor light and pouring rain meant they really arent worth posting up. I am going back to do more documentation though and the area has raised a question that I am dying to get answered so I am sure I will have more to pop up another time

Great report and some really fab remains there, Curious. Nice to see the Coastal Artillery Searchlight too...it's fairly similar to the one in Seaton where I live.
Excellent work. :)

It looks like a cider press above the ammo store. There's also a pillbox further up from the searchlight ;) Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Foxy & Badoosh.

Yeah there are a few more feature I want to try and capture, I just had to get back to the house because I was soaked right through and the camera wasnt enjoying the experience either:rolleyes:

Badoosh - The cider press idea may just be hitting the nail on the head. I'll see what I can find
addition: You are an absolute legend!!! It is indeed a cider press of the horse drawn kind, after a little research it is the classic remains or just such a piece of equipment. Thank you very much
Foxy - I'm sure Exmouth has one of these searchlight stations too (although it's been a while since I have been down there). I can't say I've ever really ventured out to Seaton, something which I have no excuses for and should be ashamed of myself.

great post.

very similar photos to the ones ive got ,that i havent managed to work out how to post yet. did you check out the toilet block in the carpark just above the ammo store it looks like it was converted from a wwII instalation of somekind.

also near to the pink search light box, on the beach is the iron pole that was used to anchor one end of the anti submarine chain/boom/barrier thing

Lol... yeah I did get more pictures of all of those but they are all terrible as I think the camera got a bit waterlogged

The toilet block was the emergency engine house (a back up if you like).
The is also another gun mount site, the pillbox, an observation post.

I want to know what the flue/ventiliation shaft is for in the woods just above The Ness, it seems to far away to be linked to any cellars but because it has a fresh lick of paint it does look like a relatively new feature.

have you checked out the pillbox on teignmouth sea front ,just past the jubelee shelter. its part of the natural rock with the gun holes cut out,now concreted up. the access door is partly blocked up .

there is also another pill box/machine gun post along the railway line toward dawlish at smugglers . the pill box is resting on old railway line poss from when it was built as they are rusted almost away in places.

To be honest I have only just started venturing out and actually looking at this kind of site properly... I think as I am getting older I have only just started to not take them for granted.

I am hoping to nosey around Teignmouth soon

Foxy - I'm sure Exmouth has one of these searchlight stations too (although it's been a while since I have been down there).
Cheers, Curious. I need to get over that way soon as there are some other things that I want to check out in Lympstone. I'll have a look out for that. :)
I can't say I've ever really ventured out to Seaton, something which I have no excuses for and should be ashamed of myself.
No need to be ashamed. I've never been to Teignmouth either. Let me know if you'd like to meet up for an explore over this way anytime. :)

Thanks for the offer Foxy... I can see you are quite infamous here (not meant as an insult) and I would be honored to join you some time

I couldnt find that exmouth searchlight station where I thought it was on google maps... gonna have to have a think about that one

Excellent report Curious Dragon. The Teignmouth and Torbay areas were attacked regularly by fighter aircraft during a series of raids known as the Popup raids. They were more of a nuisance than anything but quite a number of 40mm Bofors were moved there to counter them.

A few little extras for you...
I met up with jibhead (great to put a face to the name by the way) and revistited. There was blue sky so should have been fine but then....

Shaldon17.jpg

How can the same crap happen to the same girl twice!!
I got a little soggy again but fortunately it was gone almost as quickly as it started.

Shaldon16.jpg

*Old pillbox, it has been cemented up for many years now and after a great bit of monkey-work jibhead confirmed the subsidance behind the pillbox had blocked any chances of seeing inside... gutted :(

Shaldon15.jpg

*A mounting point for the boom which was pulled across the river mouth, unfortunately the matching one on teignmouth side is nowhere to be seen

I have also managed to get a look inside the engine house and was pleasantly suprised... I will keep you all waiting as I finish sorting out the pictures ;)

OK... as promised

I managed to peek through the door into the sealed up engine house and although I couldnt get inside I managed to get a couple of shots which prove that all the plant life which covers the building is only external. Inside looks like it is in brilliant condition, you can see there are at least two rooms inside
