Did you climb the lighting tower?
hey up!
i did indeed climb one of the twenty or so thingies lol!! not to the top mind. i remember thinking it wasn't really worth being seen from the main line just so i could say Look i got up there! so i climbed up to have a butcher's, got some pics, said 'oh, trains', and came down. was fun though! even if i did pick the one without the submarine bit.

I really like disused railway stuffs, - theres some interesting derelict sidings just outside of sheffield if your ever over that way with loads of old station footbridges and some rolling stock including an old brakedown crane lying around - i'll try and dig out a multimap link later.

the sheffield sidings sound good. these only had a single discarded skip-shaped truck. there used to be a travelling crane but i'm not sure whether it would have a normal track or a different size track so i couldn't tell if i found where it would have been or not. i expected to find a huge track down the middle of all the others.
what's a sectional boiler? that one there was in a tiny cramped room so tricky to photograph all of it, but here's the front:
i have to say, aesthetically, it's not my favourite boiler.

Hmm, If your thinking of the experimental one we found im not sure, It looks almost identical but it could be coincedence - lets face it there have got to be thousands of boilers with doors that shape... Would be very cool if it was the same type though. got anymore shots of the inside or the back?
Its interesting but its still not a fluidised bed boiler....

Sectional Boiler - "a boiler composed of a number of sections, which are usually of small capacity and similar to, and connected with, each other. By multiplication of the sections a boiler of any desired capacity can be built up"
A sectional boilers made up of lots of cast iron sections bolted together - kind of like a boiler thats been through one of theose bread slicers they have in bakerys basically you add more slices to make the boiler longer and more powerfull - Does that make any sense?
i'm fairly certain that boilers the same as one we saw in a boiler research place we had a look at the other day - the one we saw had a pipe going to that hole below the bottom door through which coal was blown down from a hopper outside the building.

ok, thinking about it i'm not sure i'll get a chance to go back now, which is a shame. but next time i find a boiler anywhere i'll remember this and poke my head in its every corner.

Hi Sam,
Did you access it from the disused line that crosses the milton road or from the river side?
Thinking about heading up there soon for a little explore and photography.

I went here at the beginning of April (photos).
Aggregate trains use a couple of the sidings and seem to visit most days (except Sunday...). They demolished the old control rooms to make way for stones.
Hey Dab, i tried to contact you about your pics a while back but wasn't sure if you were on this forum.
you mean where the huge piles of stones are there used to be buildings? what kind of size? i tried to google the place but all that came up were the development plans and not a pic of how it used to look.

yah - the aerial photo from a few years ago shows a few buildings. The little one directly under the starting cross still exists (it's full of electrics and was humming) - the ones on the strip above and below it have all gone. Some were two stories high (oooh - I wonder what was in them
)

you went this last weekend during strawberry fair? that'll be why the helicopter was out. good time to go somewhere though, half the town is down by the river getting plastered.
anyway, really nice to see i wasn't the only person to look on a map and think that bare patch of scrubland looked interesting!
