Doing a bit of driving and noticed a rather rusty brown transmitter on the horizon, the state given away by a nice, well maintained mast neighbouring it. This set me explore senses a twitter and I went an had a nose.

The site is bigger the I have looked at here, I only visited the WW2 site, the ACE part is further back of the road, however there were people in the adjacent building looking at me strangely so I left. From looking at other reports I have found, the remaining buildings are quite big, but well trashed and quite modern looking.

A bit of further info from Subbrit. http://www.subbrit.org.uk/rsg/sites/c/coldblow_ace_high/index.html

On with my small selection of piccies

I love this site. When I was a kid and I used to drive past it with my Dad, we would always be completely in awe of the massive dishes (a la Stenigot) that were here. ACE HIGH was a Tropo-scatter system - you bounced your radio signals off the upper atmosphere and then down again, allowing them to go further and avoid any sneaky Russian detection systems. It was manned I believe by the Royal Signals and also, later by the USAAF's "Tropo" Group. I believe that they left some of their signage at Swingate, which was also connected with ACE HIGH at some point. Good to see photos of the WW2 bit as well.
