Greenham Common, a site that has appeared many times on DP. I wondered whether I should put up another post as the place has been so well covered. However, the weather yesterday was superb and I had another visit planned so some shots were taken. Then I got to thinking about when I went to the airshow there in 1983. So much noise, so much activity, there was even an SR-71 Blackbird. Strange how things change with time, the former base is so quiet now with its continued return to nature. The couples walk and the children play, close by to where cruise missiles, each one with the potential of sixteen Hiroshima's once were stored. Greenham is a site that truly shows how time moves on and what we consider to permenant can be so easily be changed.
Not all the runway has been removed. This small island of concrete remains as witness to the days of aerial activity
Some of the runway lighting can still be seen
This hangar has lost its roof
It would be interesting to identify the animal that has made this location its final resing place
The Armoury
Aviation fuel store at Sunset
Thanks for looking.
