The Tonypandy Powerhouse was built in 1905 to contain steam-powered generators for the Llwynypia and Glamorgan collieries, and was the focal point of the Tonypandy Riots of 1910. A Grade II listed building, it remains standing empty and decaying today amid light industrial units, a much-needed road bypass and the inevitable small retail centre. There are plans for funding and a restoration of sorts, but it would seem the jury’s still out regarding any useful purpose for the place.

As much as I like old buildings, I personally think it’s something of an eyesore. But because of the historical importance and the Listed status, the Powerhouse is there to stay.
