We made it to this fantastic place by early evening, really should have visited in the morning as the site is massive, the rest of the family only managed to explore half of the original fort before flaking out on the grass, leaving me to find what I could with the remaining light. I really liked this place, proper dereliction with nature reclaiming what we no longer want.
The fort was built by the Dutch in early 1800 and after the declaration of independence it fell into the hands of the Belgian state. The total area consists of about 30 acres.
During the first and second world war the old fortress was a prison controlled by the Germans, and at the end of WWII Chartreuse became a military hospital for American forces. Since 1983 the fortress and in particular the modern barracks nearby have been abandoned.
Today the fortress is used by the airsoft-community and known as 'the Maze'.
Thanks to Teejf for help with this place at short notice, much appreciated. Sorry about all the pic's, I just could not keep snapping.
Thanks for looking
