As the Tyne ship yards are getting a bit of attention on here at the moment thought I'd share some photos of what remains of Harrison's little yard at Bill Quay. Its a tiny yard compared to Swan's and H+L and little remains of it today.
What brings this place alive for me are the old photos, and how the big concrete crane stands still remain 20+ years after closure.
Here it is at its heyday, picture is likely from the 50s or earlier.
And today, but note the crane stands remain
From closer up one of the metal supports from the crane is still present
Here is a 19th century photo of early days at the yard making wooden boats
And sure enough the slipway is still there
Notice the crane near the water edge in this picture
And the remains:
Another couple random shots.
What looked to be an interesting set of old buildings next door though turned out to be a car scrap yard, full of rusty cars and junk. Which was a shame as the arched buildings are clearly visible on the 19th century photo. Today though they are roofless walls hiding scrap.
