Pillbox - Macclesfield

Not sure when i did this, but i was in the area and had to take a look,

Unfortunately being on the edge of a housing estate, over the years it looked as though it had been used as a 'den' by the local kids and later on by some druggies, and a public toilet.

Looking directly over a canal and a railway, ensuring good cover from any invading forces,

ike,

Always good to see a pillbox.
Can't tell what type it is, unfortunately, as the exterior shot is too dark, but some good interior pics.

Cheers :)

Cheers Krela. T22 was my first guess too, going by the outside, but wasn't conversant enough with the inside layout to stick my neck out on that one!

According to the Defense of Britain project, its a type 24,

Type 24 pillbox, overlooking Macclesfield Canal. The canal is approx. 10m away. It covers a small bridge. A railway line is situated to the rear. Sited on the W bank of the canal facing E. It has stepped embrasures.
DoB

But, i always got thought it was a type 22, so I'm not sure which is right,

ike,

In my (extensive) experience the defence of britain database is often wrong!

nice pics ike.

Interesting comments guys, never really throught that there are different types of Pilboxes, I just assumable (quite ignorantly) that a pillbox was a pillbox.

I know of one quite local to me and I might check out now.

...never really throught that there are different types of Pilboxes...

One of the things that got me interested in them were the differences. Not just different types, but how each type plan was interpreted by the builders and how they differed according to the local available materials.
The first thing that really got me started was finding my first one. :)
Check out the pillbox thread in the military forum...it's very long, mind!

Cheers :)
