Montmartre Cemetary

Not sure where to post this, I was in Montmartre, Paris for work on Monday & Tuesday. Finished our work early so had a look around the Cemetary there. I apologise for the quality of the photo's as they were taken on my mobile phone. So I thought I'd post some up on here, the condition of some of the catacombs was quite poor, many of the doors had been forced open & had blankets, beer cans, food wrappings etc.....Inside them, presumably the homeless also use them as a place of rest.

I was hoping to get to Pere La Chaise Cemetary to see the graves of Jim Morrison & Oscar Wilde but it was about a 40 min bus ride from where we were staying & time was at a premium. :icon_evil

I saw morrioson and oscar wildes graves when I was in paris last November, To be honest I thought the grave-spoting was a bit strange, I was there with a load of other students and there was a real rush to get around an see everyone which was something I don't really buy into.

Well it was either walk around the Cemetary or walk down Rue de Clichy which is full of peep shows, stripper bars etc....... Not my thing at all so opted for the cemetary.

Dungbug, that's an amazing place...could you not have put the report in the religious forum? Definitely worthy of it, I'd say. Those tombs are pretty fantastic, aren't they! Love that tiny stained-glass window in the cross opening.
Very good to see that. Thanks for showing those.

You're welcome, believe it or not there were some very recent graves there so I thought it couldn't be classed as 'derelict'

My friend who was with me took photo's as well (on a much better camera) so I'll ask him for them & post them as well.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who enjoys walking around cemetaries and looking at the graves. These are the kind i like (not in a morbid way, they just fascinate me). Love all the different types of graves, (not graves, can't remember the names of them

) love the red bricked one in pic 18, with the pillars at each side, i really do like that.

I much prefer seeing these types then the more usual cemetaries. A lot of the foreign countries seem to opt for this type.

Photo 18 was truely stunning, the photo doesn't do it justice to be honest, when we looked through the doors the inside was decorated with mosaic tiles, each tile was about 10mm square, the tiles depicted Jesus, Mary and other biblical characters.............Must of taken weeks to finish!

I remember hitchhiking to Paris in 92 or 93 and sleeping rough in this cemetery, was quite peaceful at night. Also visited Per lachaise (sp?) and did the tourist Morrison/Wilde thing. lol.

Good stuff.

I think the bridge was put in after the cemetary had been established, what was weird is the lack of noise............Very strange! :neutral:
