The History:
Well, nothing can beat the incredible reports that @HughieD does. Comprehensive and complete so visit his report for all you need to know and some fab pics as well.
In a nutshell, built in 1955 it was a munitions storage area for RAF Wittering and homed mainly four types of weapons. 1000lb high explosive bombs, 68mm SNEB rocket, BL755 cluster bombs and high explosive ordnance from USAF Lakenheath. The site was decommissioned in 1966.
The Visit:
This place is relatively local to me and to most it’s nothing special but it certainly is good for a relaxing mooch. First time out was with a friend and non member. It was a blustery day towards the end of summer. The wind through there was something else, in between driving showers. The acoustics of the bomb storage units is amazing. I can see why they held so many raves. We spent a fair bit of time at this location and ended up taking cover in a building at the front making bacon butties and coffee on my camping stove like a couple of hobos. We had to close the doors on both sides due to the wind so one can imagine the smoke buildup from cooking
The second trip was with Funky Muffin 2 at the close of day in December, right before lockdown. The sun was fading fast and it was bitterly cold so only got a few photos. I was amazed at how much the place had changed graffiti wise. The buildings at the front are almost fully covered now. All photos taken on my then iPhone 6 Plus and most recently on my Huawei P30 Pro.
Thanks for looking
