EXTWISTLE HALL - BRIERCLIFFE - SEPT 2021

The History…
Extwistle Hall is a Grade II listed Manor House & is on the English Heritage at risk register - The hall sits high on the moors of Briercliffe, Lancashire. The land was originally owned by Kirkstall Abbey & later sold to Robert Parker - the Parker family, a prominent family at that time, built the Tudor style hall in 1585. The Parker family occupied it for some 200 years before moving to Cuerden Hall around 1718.

I believe the house has been inhabited since around 1975 - In 2015, the property was up for sale for offers over £500,000.

Set in a beautiful location - easy access & very peaceful!. Not much is left here to be honest but the 2 out buildings still make it worth it & the Manor House itself despite its state is still a really great looking building. What looks like the cellar area possibly is now completely collapsed & the building itself is in a serious state. Local legend states that the head of the household still oversees the property to this day…

Posters here may be aware of the demolition of the Dorman Long tower "on the border of Middlesbrough and Redcar". It was the last remnant of the Dorman Long steelworks, the company that created the Tyne Bridge and the similar Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia.

Thanks to the change of Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport minister - now Nadine Dorries - Grade II listed status was withdrawn from the tower, and it was blown up on Sunday just gone.

Whatever one's opinion about the "historic and architectural importance" of the structure, how can just a single person decide on its demolition?

There is still in the UK the great divide between "us and them", between "white collar and blue collar", between "posh and trade". Many unused churches and chapels could be demolished, and the land re-used. But think of the uproar.

The online forum of The Daily Telegraph was full of waffle about the tower's "brutalist architecture". Good frief - it was part of a steelworks! What did the writers expect? Something like the Taj Mahal? To them "heritage" has to be attractive, pretty, even romantic. At least Historic England realised its value as part of the evolution of this country's industrial past. But it was over-ruled by this a-few-days-in-the-job minister.

As posters here fully recognise, all manner of structures are valuable examples and reminders of our past. A pity some of our MPs do not.

oh 100%… I don’t think the pictures even do it justice to how bad of a state it is in.. one of those ones they maybe could of saved had they done something years ago.. sadly they never

Lovely Mate

We did this one a few months back. Always nice to do an easy explore every so often. Great photos. But looks like you didn't risk going all the way up the stairs either!
