Visited with DK, What an adventure! Got to say I've explored places that had an atmosphere before but nothing like this. Thanks to Ridds for answering the Stupid O'Clock phone call when we couldn't find the way in :D

A quick dart over some earth and a massive bang as my size 11s almost ripped half a wall down, swift rebuke from DK and we were away! Quite an experience for me, letting someone else take control. DK even had me commando crawling down a corridor :D

I love the contrast between falling down and this, it just needs a bit of a clean.

What really saddened me was the thought that this was the only thing some people would see all day long

I guess if DK was there when it was live the patients might have seen this

And people were in there when they should have been outside with friends and family, having the best time of their lives

Something almost "28"

To be honest I could write any amount of waffle and chuck up a million pictures and it wouldn't do it justice, the only way you can do that is to get in there.

Thanks, I try my hardest and like to think I have improved since I started taking photos :D

Did you see art therapy, and, if so, what kind of state was it in? Is there much patient artwork left? As I said elsewhere, I haven't seen any pictures of it lately.

All these accounts from Cane Hill are too much! I haven't been inside since 2005, and thought that was it for me - but it really is the most astonishing place and I want one more look!)

p.s. commando crawling down a corridor probably isn't the safest thing given the hazardous material on the floors (there's a good reason formal visitors have to wear boots without laces!)

That reminds me I need to update the asbestos page with more info about how masks aren't enough to protect you from the risk. It's what attaches to your clothes and goes home with you that's equally problematic.

Asbestos is very sticky, it attaches to any cloth material it comes across and stays there, for a LONG time. Thus you take it with you and deposit around the various places you go afterwards. Your bedroom, your washing machine, etc. etc. etc. There are many cases of the wives of men who used to work with asbestos getting asbestosis and other related cancers even though they had never been near the places their husbands had worked. It was simply because they came in contact with it via the clothes.

There's a reason why people who work with asbestos have to wear disposable protective clothing (including plastic overshoes) then double bag it and dispose of it as asbestos waste.

Um, sorry if that wasn't too clear. The reason, as I said, is the hazardous material on the floors (loose asbestos etc).

Yes I understand about asbestos, I just fail to see why they would stipulate that boots are to be worn without laces?

Because asbestos fibres will attach to them and get carried away with you wherever you go. You know what H&S rules are like these days!

Sorry, that's a bit clearer. I wasn't quite sure what you meant initially. As Krela said, asbestos attaches to cloth material extremely easily- and cloth laces can often brush against the floor and pick up the fibres...
