Brackla 8xs - Bridgend Wales

Brackla in Bridgend was originally a Royal Ordnance factory and had 8 Underground bunkers built to store amuunitions, Known as the 8 X's. In the 60's 2 of the 8 X's were taken over by the Home Office and converted into Nuclear Bunkers to act as the Regional Government HQ for Wales. (RGHQ). The two nuclear bunkers were modified to have Nuclear Proof entrances and the ammunition tunnels changed to accomodation and offices.

It's an interesting place with a lot of wartime history to it. Thanks they came out alright even though my torches kept failing while in there

How bizarre those doors are at the entrance. Looks more like an incinerator than a bunker!

Diagram i had found online showing the tracks & ammunition bunkers/tunnels. Most are unfortunately filled in but would not be hard to dig them out to get in.Known as the 8xs.

You are on what is presumably still MoD property which does NOT constitute trespass as it would be with most other property in the UK, railways excepted. So you are already committing an actual criminal offence. So if you start digging out entrance ways you are creating a whole other pit of sh-1-t you might find rather sticky to extricate yourself from. I'd really not do that if I were you.

One of the Nuclear Bunkers was used for document storage in the late 90s early 00s don’t know if it still is. Housing certainly encroached on the overground site and still continues.

It's not been MoD for years mate it's privately owned. And 6 of the 8xs are on public land. The woodlands are public is well as plenty of dog walkers around during the day.


And im not planning to dig anything out it's not worth it im happy seeing what was already open. All I was saying it would not be impossible if someone wanted to get in them.

MoD sites have signs around the site this does not so nothing indicates its MoD no fences around the site nothing like I said im very certain it was sold a long time ago the nuclear bunker side now privately owned and gets used for filming.

Ahh that's great. I hadn't realised the site was sold off.

There's masses of military sites in France and very few are ever sold off. Every site is liberally sprinkled with warning signs too. But trespassing there seems to be largely ignored and in the Verdun WW1 forts in particular the army use them now and again, two are used a lot, but it doesn't stop the public wandering around frequently, all legal considerations being totally ignored! The danger though is the little piles of Merde alla Militaire everywhere, each topped with a piece of tinted toilet tissue! Clearly the French army don't teach their "kinder soldieres" the principles of an "individual shovel recce" the way we do! Germany though... whoah! they can get really heavy with you, even on simple derelict building explores. I guess we are lucky in the way the law treats trespass in the UK though you would think it was a real crime the way some site secca behave if they run into you!
