A beautiful 17th century grade II listed thatched cottage with some beautiful original features.
Unfortunately part of the thatch roof has caved in causing alot of water damage, the kitchen ceiling sagging, and water damage to the floor. I can see it won't be long before the kitchen ceiling will be down too.
Upstairs 1 bedroom was inaccessible, I'm guessing as it no longer stands with the thatched roof missing from this part of the building.
The floors were extremely sketchy so I didn't venture inside the bedrooms too far, incase I ended up splattered all over the downstairs too.
The stairs were very hard to climb with the fallen debris it felt like I was climbing a esculator going the wrong way.
Some lovely bits still left behind, and the wooden beams and latch doors are beautiful.
This would be my dream home if I had the money to restore it.

What is the purpose of listing a building when there is no money to preserve it? Or the owner chooses no to.

what a shame to leave it to decay, it's not as if there isn't a housing shortage. lovely thick walls, it must have been toasty in winter and cool in summer

The atmosphere left by those who once dwelt there must feel palpable

There may be no money to restore it, but that's not the same thing as preserving it. Listing is the only way of ensuring that there is any compulsory consideration of a building's status in the planning system. A building can still be delisted and even knocked down, but 'listing' acts as a brake on the kind of wholesale redevelopment of architecturally important buildings that became commonplace after WW2, when it is always much cheaper to knock down bomb-damaged remains and build something new or have to fiddle about trying to modernise and improve often unique old buildings that don't have plumbing, wiring or internal bathrooms.
