The bridge was designed by French engineer Ferdinand Arnodin. It was built in 1906 and opened by Godfrey Charles Morgan, 1st Viscount Tredegar on 12 September 1906.
Built to take workers to and from Lysaght's Steelworks.
The bridge has been featured in a film and has even been credited for sparking the beginnings of what is now Newport County FC.
It is one of the three remaining transporter bridges in the UK the others being Warrington & Middlesbrough.
Newport Museum holds a silver cigar cutter which was presented to Viscount Tredegar on the day of the opening, as a memento of the occasion.
The bridge was shut down in 1985 because of wear and tear. Service was suspended again in 2008 with the bridge facing a £2m repair bill.
The Bridge has been closed to the public due to health & safety and is currently undergoing a renovation. Its due to reopen with a new visitor centre in 2025 after undergoing various ongoing restorations over the years.
The bridge is at the height of 74m (242ft) above the River Usk.

Getting onto the stairs was not easy and ended up freeclimbing part of it to reach the stairs and bypass the big metal doorway stopping people from getting onto the staircase.

I then decided to climb right to the top up various ladders reaching the full height at the top of one of the towers (242ft) before making a swift escape before it got too light.
