This is St John Church not far from where I live in South Wales. I has been derelict for about five years now and the weather and local thieves have taken there toll on it. I spoke to some local residents and they say that the church closed due to no one attending anymore. It just seems such a waste that it has gotten this bad.

All the insides are pretty much intact but very damp due to the roof being stripped in some places. The windows have been partially boarded up some have been damaged. There is still a lot of the stain glass windows left in, but also damaged.

I just wish places like this could be saved but have been told by the locals that no one wants to use it, and the church as a whole won’t sell the building.

Hi Mate,

Yeh such a shame, but if the church won't sell and won't do it up well that's rediculous. Nice pics though

Hi S
Rather sad really to see it in such a state. You would think someone would keep an eye on it and keep it secured - but then, nobody seems to care much these days !! Nice pictures though. Cheers Tony

Hiya Sheep
Nice explore...love churches and other religious places. A real pity it's been left like that. Such a shame about the windows too. :(

Cheers :)

Myself & Mrs Dungbug have thought many times about buying a Church & renovating it to live in, unfortunately the prices have increased a bit in recent years. I can't see why the Church doesn't sell it as a residential dwelling, it would make a greta place to live. Nice photo's chap.

Hate seeing old churches just being left to rot and decay more. It's crazy the church who owns it won't sell it so someone can repair and develop it. It's bad the thieves have taken tiles off the roof (chop their hands off grrrrr!!! sorry :( ) and seeing all the water on the floor between the pews etc. makes me mad.

Cheers Sheep, it is a beautiful building just left to rot. Well done on the find.

:) Sal

Spoke to the neighbour there and he said the church of Wales knocked it down so that the can apply for planning permission for two houses and sell the land as soon as they do.

:(

I don't normally swear on the forum, but...BUGGER! That's just horrible! :icon_evil
I have never heard of a church being demolished before. Even deconsecrated, they're usually left standing or converted into private use. If even the Church can knock down a church with impunity...there seems little hope for anything! :(

churches are getting nocked down weekly :( suprised there not trying to build a mosque in its place ....

im not relegious and not all these derelict sites can be saved.....but a church thats stood there for hundreds of years, in favour of some new houses :mad:

why wast it listed
