East Devon's Jurassic Park!
Less of an explore and more of a happenchance, I had to go into Axminster and walking along I noticed this indoor market is now being demolished. Previously used mainly for greengroceries, hardware and gardening products, the pavement outside used to be stacked with flowers and plants for sale, therefore I never noticed how tatty the actual building was until now.
Anyway, having my camera with me I took some pics.

The street frontage.

Around to the rear of the site is a car park running parallel to the glass-roofed market. I couldn't see a great deal, but managed to get some photos of the now glassless roof and another derelict shed adjacent to it.

Not a lot to it, but hope it may be of some interest.
Cheers :)

Cheers BigL. There are a few frontages like that in Axminster. They look tiny from the front but are long and narrow inside...one way of cramming them in I expect! :)

Hi Foxylady, what an interesting old structure, what are they planning to build on it, more houses? Well done for capturing it before the bulldozers roll in.

Cheers TK. I really don't know what's going to happen there...that was the first I knew about it when I walked past today. It's almost in the middle of the town so hopefully it will be trade rather than housing. :)

Thanks Sal. :) Yes, I like those curved shop fronts too. The windows are especially nice I think, but the top bit is made from really flimsy material and it's quite dilapidated, so they'll probably go I reckon. :(
I'll have to do some checking and see what I can find out.

Hi Fovylady
AFAIK the only reason work has been carried out here is due to the fact that someone set fire to it last year and the owners were told they had to make it safe. All the remaining glass and damaged sections were removed and a brick supporting wall was erected inside to hold up the main structure.
All demolition work now seems to have been completed. I think it will be a long time yet before the building is raised to the ground as there seems to be a preservation order on the frontage, especially the huge doors which some people think should be kept.
There was quite a story in the local free paper about this building at the time of the fire. perhaps its still in their archives - I haven't checked it out though.
The original plans for the site were to build a shopping precinct there, but as a temporary measure it was to be demolished and used as a temporary car park until money could be found for the scheme.
The last business to operate from here was Males Taxis who used the right hand frontage as an office until about 10 yrs ago.
I think this information is correct but it has been in such a poor state for as long as I can remember and several plans have been put forward over the years for it's potential use.
Hope this is of some interest .
Cheers Tony

The demolition signs were on there in Feb 2007... ;)

Heehee. I only ever noticed the flowers!

Tony, that's some interesting info there. I hadn't heard about the fire, but then I don't always receive the free paper...or read it! I couldn't for the life of me remember who or what traded from the side shops. I honestly never took much notice before as I'm usually on a mission to get to the bank then the Arts Cafe for coffee before getting my next bus back...fitting in some photo-taking on the way.
Cheers for that. :)

Another excellent set of snaps Foxy. An interesting location :)

Loving those curved glazed screens.

Thanks for sharing with us.

Cheers Lb. They are rather nice, aren't they. I hope they can do something with those side frontages. :)

Thanks, Al. Yes, those are the roof beams...what I managed to see of them...a pity I couldn't get a closer look or even inside. I'll try and make another visit in a week or so and see what's happening. :)

Cheers, chase. Yes, they were. I don't have a digital camera so I'm still using my trusty old 35mm Minolta. A bit expensive on the film and processing but I really enjoy using it, although I might get a digi at some point, probably this year.
