That sure is a superb viaduct in beautiful countryside. Love the river bridge too. We have a viaduct here in Devon in a similar setting as featured here by Foxylady a while back. You don't know it's there till you come round the bend in the road - takes your breath away ! Nice pics thanks

Wow. They are beautiful structures. I can't imagine modern stuff ever looking as good as that.

That bracket could have carried some signalling wire accross the viaduct.

The metal 'rugby posts' in photograph 7 are S & T cable supports that carried the signaling cables across the viaduct, there may even have been a high voltage feeder also. Obviously this viaduct was built before the days of electric signals, it appears there cannot have been enough room in the cess for the traditional cable troughs.

Metal S & T supports and hangers are very common on rail routes into large cities where there are stone/brick lined cuttings, once again lack of space at ground level for adequate cable troughs is the reason.

Thanks for all the comments guys, forgot to say that Lowgill viaduct is the one visible heading South on the M6 J37-J38 in Cumbria

Ooooooooooooooooh I'm in my element with all this railway related stuff I've seen in the past couple of days. I love the first viaduct, but the second one is great, love it.

Hello a great post of classic railway ephemora. The two viaducts are absolutely outstanding with the second am pretty sure is a grade 2 listed structure. Is this the Keswick branch with the viaducts both spanning the river Lune. God I love railway pics their so evocative.

No it's the line that runs from the WCML south of Tebay to Clapham Junction (just west of Settle )
