on the line between Coventry and Nuneaton (commonly refered to as the Bedworth branch) are two closed and boarded up signal boxes (the railway term for this is 'switched out).
both are lever type manual boxes and worked for over 100 years until 2009 when the Bedworth branch was upgraded and signalling came under a new fangled electronic centre miles away. the road crossing gates they used to control are also worked from elsewhere by track sensors and remote cameras.
their names are COUNDEN ROAD and HAWKSBURY LANE and have been stripped internally of re-usable components and left boarded up. from some knowledge of railway history i can tell you the brick lower parts date from 1890's and are of a LONDON NORTH WESTERN RAILWAY design while the top wodden parts are 1960's BRITSH RAILWAYS LMR design.
this stretch of line used to have (before Dr Beeching) 6 stations and 4 signal boxes, now there are no working boxes and one station left. not sure when they are due for demolition but thought id better record their status before they go.
(note.) no power inside and as they are boarded up it is virtually pitch black in there, i only had my KodakM853 with me and although i had my settings on HIGH ISO the pics are not brilliant but adequate.
