Hi, as some of you may already know I've been documenting the remains of RAF Tranwell (Morpeth) recently and was lucky enough to be sent a plan of the airfield by Foz77. Well yesterday I made another visit with the intentions of finishing off the airfield part of the site but they were holding a point to point horse trail right where I wanted to be, so I thought I would investigate one of the auxiliary sites nearby that I had spotted a couple of weeks ago. The site is most certainly RAF and is opposite site 5 and 6 on the plans but doesn't appear on then. My question is this... is it possible that the official map is wrong or would there be another explanation for its omitance. The rest of the map seem to be correct and it's starting to bug me now. I would be grateful for any light you could shed on this

cheers Jon

ps I'll post the report up on here soon

I have no firm information on this but often the plans in existence are the pre-build plans and don't take into account any actual in building modifications. So it's possible that it was decided that the site not on the plan was deemed a more suitable location, or is a post plan addition. It's highly unlikely to be omitted for any interesting reason.

Morpeth dispersed sites are shown on 1386/50. If you have 1385/50 it might not show all the dispersed sites.
If the plan you have is earlier than the 1950 dated ones I'd be interested in the Air Ministry Drawing number as I haven't seen an earlier one for Morpeth.

It's also possible that the site you have seen is military but not part of the airfield?

it is 1386/50 that I have, some of the site shows up on 1950's os maps right up to the present day with buildings on the other dispersal sites as late as 1984

Thanks guys I think I have got to the bottom of this now, the site was, as far as I can gather, actually a children's tb hospital but was expanded during the war when the children were shipped out to Hexham and it was used as a military hospital. Some of the building footprints I found don't match up with any of the os maps so I'm guessing they were built and removed in between the years the maps were drawn up plus this is why they aren't marked on the raf plans as they are not strictly part of the dispersal sites as tigger said
