I had things to do in the Potteries and arrived early in order for a mooch around Burslem.

The Acme Marls site has been largely demolished since the company was taken over and production transferred alsewhere. The factory used to make clay refractories and kiln furniture such as shelf supports. The major buildings remaining are the three bottle ovens which are listed structures, for what such protection is worth. These last remaining downdraught kilns in the Staffordshire Potteries look very sad and completely out of context with the rest of the works gone. So much for valuing our heritage. :(

I expect that the site will remain undeveloped for the time being if the economic downturn continues. It was certainly providing a haven for lots of butterflies and for the brick enthusiast there are a wide range of different makes scattered around. :)

Brilliant! I really think they need looking after a bit better though. Bushes growing in the brickwork up the side etc. They look so out of place in those shots
We have a similar type of chimney at Lemmington, Newcastle upon Tyne. It was something to do with glass I think. It is now part of a landrover dealership and well looked after.
Thanks for posting. :)

Fantastic stuff! Loved seeing the kilns when I visited Stoke-on-Trent last year. They do look very odd without the rest of the buildings though, and out of context, as you said. Gorgeous brickwork. :)
