The Bärenquell Brauerei never quite managed to adapt to life after the wall came down. Built in 1888, the brewery made some popular beer and prospered for many years – that is, until it was comandeered by the DDR as property of the state and renamed VEB Bärenquell, VEB meaning Volkseigener Betrieb, or translated into English ‘owned by the people’ . Although it managed to keep up production until after the wall fell, the brewery was finally shut down in 1994 having produced over 600,000 hectolitres that year.
It is hard to understand why a still well selling beer like Barenquell struggled and many opinions have been muted the most popular seems to be the cost of beinging its antiquated machinery up to spec to allow it to effectively compete with its Western competition.
