Borders College

Borders College was formed in 1984 by the amalgamation of Galashiels Technical College, Henderson Technical College (Hawick), Duns Agricultural Centre and the Agricultural Centre, Newtown St. Boswells.

On April 1st 1993 under the Further Education (Scotland) Act 1992, the College was transferred from the Borders Regional Council to a Body Corporate.

In 2009 the collage relocated to a new premises leaving this delightful old building with a load of bits & bobs behind.

Unusual design of what appears to be Staff Workroom A. Obviously built to allow for maximum wall length for shelving, with the natural light entering through the sloping roof lights. But why the large heavy-looking central part of the ceiling? Perhaps it contained all the artificial lighting.

Not sure it the flat part is just false ceiling tbh to make the room lower

Yes - it does seem to be a 'design feature' to hide the structural parts of the roof. But why? To me it looks unnecessarily heavy and dominating. Something lighter could do the same thing.
