The financial crisis caused by the collapse of the banks in 2008 hit the construction industry particularly hard. As house-building ground to a halt, so too went the demand for bricks. In 2009, the owners of Brickworks C made the tough decision to stop production and lay off the 61 employees at the site. The hope was for an early economic recovery, so production could be re-started. Sadly, four years on the site stands empty and forlorn.

Initial impressions are that everyone simply downed tools on the last day of business and left, with high vis jackets and hard hats hung up, coffee mugs and personal effects still on desks. Closer inspection reveals that the electrical cables have been cut from the multitude of machinery and the store room is littered with empty cable drums. Holes in the roof are letting in the weather (and pigeons) and the equipment is starting to show signs of decay. Will Brickworks C ever re-open? Somehow I doubt it.

The site looked a bit big for a solo visit so I invited a friend….

But she was busy filming some dance thing for TV, so I went with Cachewoo instead. Thanks mate, it was a great day out.

When the wind started spinning up this old fan in the wall it sounded just like a huge truck pulling up outside. Much relief followed when we worked out what was actually making all the noise.

As always, thanks for looking.

Cracking shots, looks identical to one I explored near Leeds presumably the same company. Only difference is the one I visited appears to have a better roof.
