Interesting stuff there. The vice brings back particular memories for me as my Grandad had one very similar in his garden nailed to a post. I think that they are ex-railway.

It is a typical late Victorian design that was found all over the place as they are not railway specific. However, that is not to say the one your saw did not come out of some railway workshop when it was surplus to requirements.
