History:

Byram Park in Brotherton belonged to the Ramsden family from 1628 to 1922. The family gained great wealth and status through investment in the textile industry in Huddersfield in the eighteenth century. In 1760 the Sir John Ramsden commissioned York-based architect John Carr to redesign the hall alongside his new pleasure grounds. In 1782, the estate was visited by Capability Brown, as part of a Yorkshire tour, and a survey prepared by his assistant George Speyers in December of that year. This ‘general plan for the alteration of the place’ is now lost.

Local historian David Pickersgill is yet to find evidence that Brown’s designs were implemented at Byram Park. The fish pond is more intricately shaped than usual for Brown’s projects and, according to Pickersgill, the landscape was extensively reworked in the nineteenth century.

To the west of the estate, there are numerous limestone quarries and lime kilns that would have provided building materials and agricultural fertilizer. During World War II, Byram Park was owned by the Ministry of Supply initially as an ammunition dump and later as a vehicle storage depot. It was the underground dissolution of limestone and gypsum that caused Byram Hall to be, in the most part, destroyed by a sinkhole in the 1950s

Now all that stands is the Service wing with parts of a semi used, part derelict pig farm.
