Got back from the Cane Hill Development Forum held Friday 9th May in Coulsdon town centre. I would just like to say that the representatives from both Broadway Maylan and English Partnerships were very friendly and helpful regarding my research. www.canehill.org.uk for more information.

The event basically comprised of several display boards, the information of which can be found at the above website. Questionnaires were also being distributed. The event was extremely popular amongst local residents relative to the December event. Reasons for this include the fine weather, the location in the town centre, and the fact that Broadway Maylan (with pressure from the council) decided to increase their scope from 1000 newsletters publiscising the day - to 10,000!

The information conveyed to me that'll be of interest to quite a few of you is that the general consensus is for demolition/deconstruction to start next month! English Partnerships have carried out extensive surveys of the site - some with respect to retaining all the existing buildings. However apart from the fact that they are asbestos ridden with low structural integrity, the ward wings are just not practical for gentrification i.e. the depth of the buildings is unsuitable for apartment conversion, they are too close together (issues of privacy), and they do not meet the new building codes in terms of 'green' environmental issues.

They are confident that demolition will be starting imminently purely because each day those buildings remain, the government is further out of pocket! The good news is that the Admin block, Chapel and Water Tower will all be retained and restoration of these buildings will be undertaken - this will include making them water-tight and removing all the asbestos. Once they have been restored to their former glory their actual use will be designated (once the overall proposal for the site has been chosen).

All in all progress is happening fast on the hill, and it seems that the majority of the complex has only a few weeks left before the bulldozers start arriving.

If anyone wants to find out more about Cane Hill's recent history then Coulsdon Library is an absolute must if you're in the area. The archive collection there includes many extensive surveys (mainly from the MSU & Science Park fiascos) as well as plenty of detailed information about the past proposals themselves.

On top of that it's just a 3 min walk from Cane Hill's entrance and you couldn't wish to meet more friendlier staff!
