Cerebos Salt Works, Greatham - May 2008
Now this was a cracking explore and I have my reasons for not posting any pictures prior to this but I've finally got them up on flickr and here they are. One of the best things about this explore was that feeling of covering somewhere that I've not seen pictures of before, that was a first for me and a great one at that.
Bit of background info first, Cerebos is a derelict salt works site situated in Greatham, a small village just off the A689 near Hartlepool. There has actually been salt extracted from this site since 1894 with Cerebos taking control in 1903. Centura Foods bought the site in the 70s and began producing chutney for Sharwood's before it finally closed its doors for good in 2002.
The site itself is actually deceiving and much larger than what you realise at first glance. Warehouses, offices, garages and all the other usual bits you would expect at a site like this but there is also an on site fire station, medical unit and adult training and recruitment centre plus the biggest boiler house you will have ever seen!
In the 5 years since this site has been closed there has only been few interested in viewing it as the land is so contaminated it would be pretty much useless for property developers. It seems that the only thing this site is used for right now is police dog training (and trust me that is a more than regular occurrence) and exercises for the local fire station along with a regular bus service through Greatham!
Just a little word on the interior pics, they were during a very limited time inside the building so apologies for the quality of those.
There are a few more up on my flickr at http://www.flickr.com/photos/pooliegirl/
