Just a little explore here. Nothing epic but quite an interesting and historic place. This old corn mill that stands surrounded by beech trees by the Derwent River on the Chatsworth Estate was built by James Paine, a successful architect of the mid and later decades of the 18th century. He created a number of features in the park at Chatsworth including two bridges. The mill was built in 1761 and was a replacement for the former working mill near the house and was designed as an ‘ornamented’ working building. The mill’s ‘head race’ was fed by the Derwent that ran part underground, part open. The tail race then discharged back into the river via an arched stone culvert.
The Mill will was last worked by Mr Wilfrid Johnson in 1950 and twelve years later the mill was damaged by falling trees in the great storm of 1962. Fortunately the Chatsworth Estate prevented the mill from being dismantled and had it made safe as a ruin, thus maintaining its architectural contribution to the landscape.
Here’s the pictures.
