im not a religious chap but i do love churches ,,,lots of wood mmmmmmm wood beautiful place ,,surely a mooch below stairs would have been in order tho ???? great set of pics

how loverly...whats down the steps?

No it is not almost certainly the boiler room, anything but. There are only about three steps and they stop on a flagged floor 18 inches or so lower than the church floor. I got all excited thinking it was a crypt entrance when we went and couldn't work out why there's a set of steps going nowhere. Then I found out during my research that it is a "baptistry" which was used to totally immerse adults for baptism, the belief being that only total immersion was acceptable. Of course such a practice is relatively rare these days.

Part 2, Such a beautiful place, I see its getting trashed in only a couple of months and its a bargain at 200k.

That's because too many people are posting pictures extremely carelessly. If you see a large marble stone on the wall commemorating Squire Fred Bloggs and his wife Ethel it doesn't take much to find the place via t'internet these days. I wish people would be rather more careful when they post frankly. I have been guilty of it myself in the past and the reasons for taking such steps aren't immediately obvious but as long as we post prominent sign posts of such a nature these places will continue to get trashed.

Oh by the way, I got a PM in here from someone who seems to think we should not explore deconsecrated and abandoned churchs. Aren't we the naughty ones.

And regarding the 200K "bargain" price tag, there's the small matter to take into consideration of the local council who are extremely reluctant to give planning permission on the place for redevelopment as housing in any form. They want some mug to stump up the asking and then convert it into a community centre or the like. Extremely short sighted in truth because they have effectively condemned the place to rot by their intransigence. But then this particular council are renowned as a bunch of kn*bheads frankly, and yes I do speak from experience with them!

I agree, I only put that image up because its already on here! and other people have named the place...why? In 2 short months I have seen this place start to be stripped, there are heaters taken off the wall ready to be taken. The floorboards are ripped up and copper taken, come on guys use your brains and lets keep these these place secret.....

Amen to that.

But don't misunderstand, and I apologise for not making myself clearer, the one on your piccie wasn't the marble plaque I meant. There's another one which directly names the benefactor and his wife.

Do you know the one I mean
