This area of Germany where I live, was once home to a very successful and proud tradition of coal mining. This particular site is 5km away from the main mine, and the coal was transported by a cable car. Closed down in 1960, as it was not "profitable" (where have we heard that before?)

At the time of closure the sites in this area were the most modern in Europe. I am not quite sure what exactly they did here, nor of the technical side of it, but I will be educating myself soon.

I wonder what they did there, too. I think it was a pit and underground they dug for coal that was transported by cable railway to a nearby pit ( that one with the cooling tower) that was connected to the main railway leading from Berlin to Cologne. If you find out more about the technical equipment I sure shall be interested. The coal must have been treated in a special way before transportation, washed and pressed maybe dried. There was an enormous oven.
