Yep always has been a pub, the local brewery built a few deco roadside pubs during that era.
I've posted pics and all the history before, so heres a few of my pics from today...

You've done it again guys -another enjoyable Report from another interesting Building :)

It seems a bit odd to see the inside in a different style to the outside!;)

i think it was done like that as its on the canal LB
used to have a lot of passing trade from the boats.

The inside would once have been more in keeping with the design of the building. It once had ornate plasterwork, deco light fittings, and beautiful gardens. However it was later 'themed' when it became a beefeater restaurant, and made to look old and tacky

To be totally honest, it looks better now than the last time I was in:)

It was one of those places that (when I went in) had a hardcore of f**wits in the bar - mind, that was a while ago

Its a lovely building, shame they ruined the art deco interior - did the company build other pubs in the same style?

There was another one with a tower closer to my house. That one was different, but still in an art deco style and I think they both opened the same year. I really regret only looking round the outside and taking no pictures, its been replaced by an ugly industrial unit now :(

Sounds like it was really nice at one time. Still has a bit of charm despite the fire damage.
I do like the plaster work with the darts on. Was that original, do you know, or part of the 'beefeater' decor?
Nice work, guys. :)

The plaster work with the darts was part of the original decor, many other sports are depicted too. Just below it where you can see solid wall would have been a huge curved window looking out onto the canal. At some point the window was bricked up and the rounded bay partitioned off to make a store room!

I wondered if it might be as it has that 1930's look about it. From your description it would have been gorgeous. :)

Just dug these out...

The gardens. A carpark was later built over them.
