Curling Clubhouse , Angus May 09

A lovely little Hansel & Grettel type log cabin situated deep in the forest of Angus.

It was the curling clubhouse for the Fothringham Estate and was last used in 1952.

Now the lake is overgrown

Inside a wall had collapsed, the windows were boarded up and a few boxes lying about on the floor.

The boxes were used to keep the curls in.
Sadly no curls left.

Ooh, is that the same one that was posted up by Spacepunk and someone else (Wolfism?) back along?
If so, it's really gone downhill. Tis a shame because it was a gorgeous little place.

T'was a Wolfism find. I was there a couple of weeks ago with Weed to hide a geocache.
There is a sawmill close by which looks 'live' but I'm not sure.

I blame global warming for the dereliction of this one. It's difficult to curl on water.

Great pics!
I love looking at old maps of near where I live and there's loads of curling ponds on them (1860 ish).
I often wonder what happened to them. Some are in the middle of nowhere.
Communities must have gotten together years ago to, erm, well....curl.
Winters must have been so much harsher years ago and I suppose people had to make the most of a situation.
I keep meaning to check them out but never seem to find the time.
Might do that over the weekend.
There's one I know of in particular near Riggend outside Airdrie......

That's good, I've now got something to do tomorrow morning instead of watching repeats of
Timeteam on More 4.

Well I did go up and take a look but it was nothing but trees and bushes and not really worth photographing.

You can just about make it out on the satellite image though if you look carefully,
or is it just my imagination? It's still there - somewhere!
