Doxford House is an 18th century house,
Formerly Silksworth House.
Built 1775-1780 by William Johnson,
opened in 1781.
On dying in 1792 William Johnson bequaethed the house to Hendry Hooper,
in 1831 Priscilla Hooper then heiress to the estate married William Beckwith of Thurcroft.
They left in 1890, and the house was let.
In 1902 Charles David Doxford 1857-1935, of William Doxford & sons (ship builders)
took a 99 year lease on the estate on dying his daughter bought the lease.
On dying she bequaethed the house and estate to Sunderland corporation,
they named the house doxford house and the estate Doxford Park.
In 1989 the house became a hall of residence,
then in 2000 the house became the Lazarus foundation for drink and drugs rehabilitation.
Doxford House is listed Grade II*,
closed in 2007.
The house is currently on the market but no buyers have came forward,
the building is deteriorating and the gardens are overgrown with weeds.
