Hi all, genuinely have no idea what this place is, but was fascinating all the same! forgive the pants photography we kinda stumbled on this place so wasn't very well equipped! there were so many little tunnels but dare not venture down most of them due to lack of torches!

If anyone can shed some light i'd be very grateful!

thanks for looking

Interesting place, possibly not a 'fort' as such but perhaps more a defence battery of some sort. Looks fairly heavy calibre from the mounts and restraints and small gauge railway.
Unless the view is better from other gun emplacements I would guess it is maybe a 'high angle' heavy battery and dates look right for a 'Palmerstone' fortification. I am guessing South coast or SE England.
Looks nicely preserved and not too chavved.

Nice

This looks a lot like a gun placement that i have seen in Scotland loch ewe I bet some of the other people on here will be able to give you some info.

thank you for that, it would make more sense than a fort, shows how much i know lol
really can't find anything about this place on the web and no info was to be seen at the site! i was surprised at how un chavved it is considering it is open to anyone to wander around, and oodles of dark tunnels to be explored. could have spent hours wondering around

Could you give us a rough idea of where it is? Even the county would be good!
Late victorian (obviously from date) so probably a Palmerston fort but with one or two WWI additions by the look of it. Interesting set of tracks down the middle of that tunnel with the fireplace in it, probably for a shell trolley.

I have the sneaky feeling I've seen this on here before though.....
Godzy

it was in the vicinity of weymouth if that helps?? i'm not being vague on purpose i really can't remember where it was now, i found it so long ago!

from what i can remember we weren't too close to nothe. a battery would make sense tho

Hey i recognise that !! Its High Angle Battery on Portland !! Just pop High Angle Battery in the search box and you should be amazed !! ( well mildly interested, anyway !!!)

oohhh you star thank you fluffy! amazed is good i like to be amazed lol :)

think that might be on the opposite side of where we were, there was one bit we couldn't get to due to really high fences. there is a prison that backs on to the "battery"

lol the prize is the pleasure of knowing you are right and helping a total novice!! :)

it is the Verne high angle battery most recent post about it is here [ame]http://www.derelictplaces.co.uk/main/showthread.php?t=22884[/ame] - the prison is HMP the Verne - an ex Victorian citadel and now, despite it's daunting appearance, a medium security prison - wandering around that particular bit of Portland can get you asked some questions if you aren't careful :)
