Colchester Garrison Church
Hi
Built almost entirely from wood, the Garrison Church opened in 1856, and was initially intended to be used as a "Nightingale" Hospital for the Crimean War. This historically important building is constructed over a Napoleonic Cemetery (established in 1804), and served as a place of Worship until a new Church for Colchester Garrison opened in 2007 -and pretty much all the original furnature was removed, except for the Altar & organ, and a few other pieces. Not only is the building Grade 2 "star" Listed, but it also was the first permanent Garrison building to be erected in Colchester, is the only remaining Colchester Garrison building from the Crimean War era, and the very last surviving wooden Garrison Church in Great Britain.
This month, it was announced that the empty building would again be used as a Church, this time for Russian Orthodox. Although this may not be a popular use for some people in Colchester, at least the building will again be used, and hopefully, well maintained.
Pics to follow...............
