I was chatting to Fluffy the other day and this came up in conversation, Gas holders are they still used in this country, I pass the ones in reading most days and they never seem to move
Any more.

Thoughts and comments

Fluffy has one in Didcot that never seems to move either. There used to be more in Reading when I was a kid.
 
They are not used any more no, modern supply control equipment and pumps etc has rendered them obsolete. Most sites are being taken down and decontaminated for re-use.
 
They have just pulled down the two in Northampton, one was a lovely Victorian one... It must be that new rushian gas we use that doesn't need them... :)

It's not so much that, it's more with modern pumping equipment it's much easier to keep the pressure up in domestic supply under high demand than it was 20-25 years ago. Think about things like the increase in demand from 5-6pm as everyone cooks their tea, etc etc. A gas cylinder stored enough capacity to keep the system pressurised during those times, then gradually refilled overnight while demand was low. There's also a change in the way we do things, electric cookers are much more common now reducing peak demand and leveling out the spikes.
