GKN is a multi-national company whom produce components for the automotive and aerospace industries. In the 1970s they acquired the Sheepbridge Works in Derbyshire which primarily produced cylinder liners for vehicles. The factory closed in 2007 at a loss of 420 jobs.

The Sheepbridge Works was originally an iron producer, with interests in coal mining known as the Sheepbridge Iron and Coal Company. Sheepbridge owned several coal mines around Barnsley in South Yorkshire; at Dinnington, Maltby and Rossington which were sunk in the early 20th century.

Smileysal, Thenewmendoza and myself decided to take a look at what seemed a fairly sizeable industrial site. The works consists of numerous shops, which were unfortunately empty. There was however a few redeemable features to make it moochworthy.

The site today is used as an Airsoft skirmishing site, much like the now demolished Clay Cross Foundry in Derbyshire.
