ok. a difficult site. very overgrown and unable to get a decent overall outside shot because of the size of the place and security. situated in a triangle of railway lines and in the shadow of the by-pass flyover on the site of the Midland Railway steam shed (1854 - 1948) and accross the way from my previous Gloucester Horton Road depot report.
ransacked and plundered since closeure (1993) it was converted from the steam shed in 1948 - 1950 and became the BRITISH RAILWAYS WESTERN REGION SIGNAL AND TELEGRAPGH DEPARTMENT depot. in 1960 newer buildings were added as the progression of uipgrading from semaphore signals to colour light signals got going under nationalization.
obviously a very open plan building but changed to lots of small rooms in the interim. in a sorry state now but once there was 800 people employed here as the S&T in this area covered Bromsgrove, Kemble, Yate, Chepstow and everywhere in between.
fire damage and local graffitti like 'Cheltenham sk8erz' and ' BMX gloucs' make it a depressing place
