found this thread whilst trawling through.....

.....is there any interest in this place still??? if so please express now because i was there tues night and the word is that the chimney is coming down 29th june (although 3 dates have been mentioned, this is the favourite at the mo), this is good info and came from the last operational gatehouse of the 3, one of which is in my road! i also have in my possession the name and no of someone who may, possibly be able to arrange a visit......there's nothing like (very!) local knowledge...

would anyone like to see any outside pics to whet appetites???

I'm interested in this site, Can't say I'd heard much about it though. is there much left? would be a shame to have missed it.

to be honest, theres's not a great deal left... the main thing is the chimney which has been a local landmark since forever! there is also some buildings by the chimney, all 3 gatehouses are standing, the main offices at the front and the social club, there maybe even be more that is not visible from outside as it is/ was a huge site!

i live so close that you could hear the sound of the demolition taking place from my back garden, something that i'm ashamed to say i never gave a great deal of thought to at the time as it was mostly a pain in the ass when i was on nights

We did the clock tower a while back. The site was semi-live then. On one side of a large shed they were ripping the wall down and on the other fork lift trucks were wizzing about!

We did venture otside to the boiler house, and inside was still VERY active. Machines ticking over, steam venting, computers sat on screen savers. It looked to me like the date set for demo is tosh to be honest!

As close as we got...

great pics! how long ago was it that you were there dweeb??

It was in early april. I planned to keep close eye on it but time has not been on my side at the mo. I'll try and get back soon, see if much has changed.

Goodyears

I'm up for it, i used to work in the Boilerhouse , and could be your guide !!!!
I have some picts somewhere of the Boilerhouse + Pumphouse, i post them when i get time

ok, so i'll be the 1st to admit this is one of the top 3 things that i'm interested in at the mo.....

....so with this in mind i decided to get some external pics on sunday whilst in the process one of the, errrr custodians of the site, shall we say, was watching me through the fence so i approached him and said i was interested in local history etc and was just taking some pics to my surprise the reply was no problem and would i like to go on the other side of the fence!! never one to look a gift horse in the mouth i accepted his offer and we got chatting and i learnt a couple of things about the site....anyway i wasn't really bothered about getting in up close and personal, i just wanted to record what was left, so here goes....

this is the 2 main parts of the factory that are left awaiting demolition as seen from what was once the main gate (god i love photostitch!)

to the left is the clock tower..

to the right the base of the chimney...

the chimney itself, a local iconic landmark...

the building to the right of this pic is live, or at least semi-live and i believe it will remain so...

to the left of all these pics, what was once factory units is now just concrete, all the rubble and masonary has now been taken away leaving a parking area for the machinery responsible and the odd pile of scrap metal....

I'm shocked that bolier house has gone. Not two months ago there was fully operational machinery in there, steam rising from the chimneys and computers ticking over on their screen savers!

another iconic landmark gone. For good.

Aye it was supposed to be the weekend before and several of us were poised with our cameras, until a fella walked over and said it was next week ffs!!

I think the chimney should have been kept over the clock towe to be honest, I love clocks but that tower is no architectual gem. The chimney was a true landmark... but I guess you cant convert a chimney.
