Work has started on demolishing Grosvenor House Hotel once one of Sheffield's top hotels that opened in 1966. The Grosvenor has played host too many famous names over the years and many well known social events. The hotel closed in July 2010 in readiness for the doomed ' Sevenstones' retail project that collapsed after the developer pulled out. Now with new plans for the area that cover the hotel site work has started on the former hotel.

Are the council having a crackdown on derelicts or something? It seems like half of Sheffield is coming down at the moment.

Yes it would seem that Sheffield developers are all kicking into action , many of the derelict sites have been left for years notably since the 2008 crash . In regards to the Grosvenor site the large scale retail project has been ongoing since at least 2007 and many buildings were purchased at the time and the merry go round began of grand plans but it soon became clear that the developer was only half interested and pulled out in the end leaving area full of derelict buildings. Sheffield council have now completely taken over the project and are pushing ahead with things like demolition of the hotel .

That figures, it did seem like a concerted policy rather than coincidence.

Anyone interested in keeping a record of area in question it would be worth while getting the camera out as the new plans involve wide scale demolition. A few derelict buildings like the Cutlers pub are been reused but only on a temporary basis and this includes the Tap and Tankard pub further up Cambridge Street. The new Sheffield Retail Quarter is scheduled to be completed by 2019.

Yup - massive demo action in Sheffield at the mo and this is another in a long list. Perhaps explains why I've not put up any reports for a while! Took some half decent pics on my phone the other day so will share them soon...
